Illuminating the Sacred in the Mundane: A Reader-Response Analysis of Gilead by Marilynne Robinson

ABSTRACT: This paper explores the intersection of the sacred and mundane in Marilynne Robinson's Gilead, through the lens of reader-response theories by Umberto Eco and Wolfgang Iser. It examines how Robinson's narrative style and thematic depth engage readers with profound religious and philosophical questions. Through the reflective letters of aging minister John Ames to his young son, Gilead beautifully explores faith, forgiveness, and the significance of everyday moments. The paper argues that Gilead exemplifies contemporary literature's ability to subtly yet powerfully dramatize spiritual themes, inviting readers into a space where the sacred seamlessly intertwines with the ordinary.
