The Word Realized in Space: Flannery O'Connor

ABSTRACT: Flannery O'Connor's EVERYTHING THAT RISES MUST CONVERGE and REVELATION are two works that I have created for the stage with the mandate from the O'Connor Estate that every word be spoken. This constraint became a liberation so that the inherently dramatic story is matched by the theatricality of actors in space. In this way we find the parallels between the early 60's and our own time and go deep into radical presence of the community. I will discuss this and will provide a case-in-point with Compagnia de' Colombari's performance of ETRMC.

Karin Coonrod is a director, writer, producer and teacher. She is the founder/Artistic Director of Compagnia de' Colombari which was born in Orvieto, Italy and is based in New York. Her work has been witnessed worldwide in Italy, Russia, Romania and USA. Her most recent production was KING LEAR at La Mama Theater in New York. The book The Transnational Theatre of Karin Coonrod (Bloomsbury) is currently in development. She teaches directing at the David Geffen School of Drama, Yale.
