Greek Tragedy and Christianity in Early Modern European Theatre: England and Italy, 1500-1660

ABSTRACT: In my paper I will present my current postdoctoral project on the intersections between Greek tragedy and Christianity in early modern European tragedy. The project, supported by the Humboldt Foundation, focuses on early modern Italy and England and considers a twofold corpus: translations and adaptations of Greek tragedies as well as Biblical tragedies written between 1500 and 1660. By analysing a selection of tragedies from the project's corpus, I will argue that Greek tragedy acted as both recipient and shaping force of Christian theology and devotional practice in early modern Europe.
