Story and Spirit in the Eucharist, Baptism & Ordination

ABSTRACT: In the Anglican and Roman Catholic traditions, three forms of prayer unite the telling of a story with an invocation of the Holy Spirit to act in in a particular way on human beings and the material substances of sacramental life. With reference to eucharistic prayers, blessings of baptismal water, and prayers of ordination, this paper considers the potential of the liturgy to bring the combination of scripturally derived narrative and invocation to life in relation to the material substances of bread, wine and water, and the sign of laying on of hands.
